Long golden beaches, rocky coves,
majestic golf courses - those are the qualities of holidays in the
Algarve.
The Algarve is
the southernmost region of Portugal and it's one of Europe's
favourite holiday destinations well known for glorious year round
sunshine and excellent sandy beaches. These vary from secluded coves
with stunning cliffs to vast stretches of golden sand all lapped by
the fresh and clear Atlantic ocean.
Inland you will find quaint villages barely touched by
tourism and traces of the Moorish presence are still evident in the
local architecture. The orange groves and blossoming almond trees
add colour to this fertile region in contrast with the whitewashed
traditional houses.
The Algarve is ideal for many outdoor sporting
activities because of it's weather. Apart from golf - the big
attraction - there are water sports, tennis, horse riding, and many
more.
The Algarve is
not only known for its nightlife with many bars and clubs but also
for the many waterside restaurants serving fresh fish and "cataplana"
- a local shellfish speciality. And you can't miss the smell of
sardines being cooked outside people's homes in the afternoon.
Popular resorts
on the Algarve, Portugal
Acoteias.Acoteias is laid back and
appeals to families and couples. It is a convenient location to
visit popular Albufeira and Vilamoura. The golden sandy beach is popular
and there is a small theme park and water park both within easy
reach. Swim in the clear blue seas of the Mediterranean. Golfers can try
the resort's 9-hole course.
Albufeira. Once a quaint fishing
village, Albufeira has retained plenty of charm, but now buzzes with
holiday snazz. Sandy beaches, modern amenities and a varied nightlife have
made Albufeira one of the most popular resorts on the coast. Wander
through the cobbled alleys and Moorish arches of the old town and relax on
Fisherman's Beach. There are acres of golden sand at Praia d'Oura or the
smaller, quieter coves tucked beneath the cliffs to the east. The old town
area has a fine choice of bars, restaurants and shops. Close to the old
town you will find the famous 'Strip' running from the top of Montechoro
hill down to the beautiful Praia da Oura. There are many vacation rentals
in this famous golf area.
Vilamoura. Unlike other resorts that
have grown from fishing villages, sophisticated Vilamoura is a
purpose-built resort with modern amenities and the centrepiece is a marina
packed with luxury yachts.
There are two large, sandy beaches on either
side of the marina. One is quieter and is perfect for getting away from
the crowd. The other – Falesia Beach – buzzes with life.
Carvoeiro. popular, picturesque
fishing village on Portugal's southern coastline. This town centres on an
open-sided village square, where you can dine outside with views past the
colourful fishing boats It offers a good main beach which hugs a bay and
is backed by cliffs, with other coves of sand close by. The town square is
the place to head for a wide choice of bars, restaurants and shops.
Explore Algar Seco - catch a lift with a fisherman to see the crazy rock
formations from the sea, then discover Carvalho Cove and twist through the
tunnels to the sea.
Praia de Luz. This is one of the
Algarve's prettiest resorts and is typically Portuguese. The Old Fort,
which is now a restaurant, is pretty and there is a sandy beach backed by
cliffs sitting on the edge of a nature park. There are pleasant walks
along the cliff top or wander past bright fishermen's cottages, through
tiny cobbled streets that wind – eventually - down to the beach.
