Chateaubriant, Brittany

The wonderful Château de Launay bears witness to the elegance dating back to the 14th and 18th centuries including many other older buildings. This secluded setting offers 5.5 hectares of extensive grounds of park and garden with its private lake, perfect for a stroll in the evening. Enjoy shared use of a generous sized swimming pool and sun terrace. Only a short drive away lies Châteaubriant a little further afield are Nantes and La Baule with long sandy beaches, lively night-life with casino in the old town and sporting activities, including varied water sports and a golf course. Accommodation is in a wing of then chateau and sleeps six.

Concarneau, Brittany

On the outskirts of the popular tourist resort of Concarneau, next to a campsite, this spacious detached house is well placed for an enjoyable beach holiday. The town beaches at Concarneau are very popular or go a little further to the sandy coves at Le Cabellou or the long beach at Trégunc. The walled old Port at Concarneau is very popular for a stroll among the wide variety of shops and restaurants. Sleeps 6-7.

Locquirec, Brittany

Idyllic country setting with stunning beaches only a few minutes (one at the end of the lane), this detached cottage makes the perfect spot for a relaxing family seaside holiday. A swimming pool completes this lovely property. The neighbouring pretty port of Locquirec with its many sheltered coves, excellent restaurants and cafes overlooking the sea is well worth a trip. Fouesnant, Britanny

Set 150m from a lovely beach at Beg Meil, this semi-detached cottage has its own furnished garden - perfect for enjoying summer meals al fresco.The cottage is cosily furnished in simple Breton style with beamed ceilings and local wooden furniture. Beg Meil has drawn visitors from afar for many years. It remains today, one of the most sought-after holiday locations in this area of France.In addition to the 17km of beach, there are also 50km of footpaths, across cliff tops and through the towns of Fouesnant, Cap Coz and Mousterlin. France's north-western peninsular of Brittany is an area of wild, rugged landscapes of vivid beauty. During centuries of relative isolation, a strong local identity formed which still exists today. The area is bounded on three sides by the sea which has added to its own culture.

     Brittany's rugged coast, called Armor - Breton for country of the sea - has only about a dozen frost days a year which is comparable with the French Riviera. Early vegetables, soft fruit, and flowers are grown for the French and British markets in this land of agriculture.
     Brittany is a region and former province of north western France corresponding with the departments of Finistere, Cotes-d'Armor, Ille-et-Vilaine, and Morbihan. Brittany is bordered to the north by the English Channel and to the south by the Bay of Biscay.
     Brittany is distinct from other French regions because of its Celtic heritage. About 25 per cent of its population of 2.8 million people are able to speak Breton, a Celtic language similar to Cornish and Welsh. The language, customs, and costumes are preserved mainly in the more isolated west.

With over 3500km of coastline Brittany is perfect for water sports and the beach. There are hundreds of beaches to choose from - many of them are gently shelving and have fantastic rock pools
Fish and pancakes (crepes) with cider are the local specialities. You can live on fruit de la mer and the humble pancake or crepe is elevated to an art form with a three-course pancake meal

Popular resorts in Brittany

St Malo. One of Brittany's most spectacular cities is St Malo, a walled seaport which perches at the edge of the Atlantic. From the 16th century mile-long ramparts you can look far across the water to several little islands crowned with ancient forts.

Quimper. The capital of the ancient diocese, kingdom and later duchy of Cornouaille, Quimper is the oldest Breton city. According to legend, the first bishop of Quimper, St Corentin, came with the first Bretons across the Channel some time between the fourth and seventh centuries to the place they named Little Britain. Relaxed but modern Quimper is still active enough to have the bars – and the atmosphere – to make it worth going out café-crawling.

Mont St Michael. Mont-Saint-Michel is a rocky islet topped by a famous Gothic abbey, 1.6 km off the coast of Normandy in northwest France in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel in the English Channel. The island, which was 5 km from the shore during the Middle Ages, is now surrounded by water only two times a month.
