Catalunya and the Costa Brava is not only a beautiful region it is also steeped in history, with some of the world's greatest empire's leaving their mark. Despite being one of the first areas in Catalunya to be developed for tourism, the Costa Brava remains excitingly and wildly beautiful.

The Costa Brava - the coast of the brave - deserves its name because its spectacular scenery. Stretching from Port Bou in the very north to Barcelona in the south, the Costa Brava is probably Spain's most famous stretch of coastline with lovely beaches often backed by steep cliffs. Since Paleolithic hunters first made their home in the caves of Ulldecona in 550BC, Catalunya has seen the Romans and Moors settle on its shores.

The Costa Brava offers holidaymakers natural beauty, proximity to the great city of Barcelona, historic medieval villages, world-famous restaurants and excellent sports facilities including world famous golf courses and ski-ing in the Pyrenees. Away from the crowds you can venture to hidden inlets and coves and along rural routes for peace, isolation and local colour, or head to Barcelona.

Girona/Costa Brava airport now has regular daily flights from many places and there are many fights from almost everywhere in the UK to Barcelona. Local train services are excellent, as is the road network. English is widely spoken, it is an asset if you speak a little Spanish but no-one expects you to speak the local language - Catalan.
Although cooler in winter than the Costa del Sol further south, the Costa Brava is also cooler in summer with daytime temperatures around 30C. Lunch on the terrace is standard except perhaps in December and January.

The Costa Brava has a quite sophisticated atmosphere. Ex-pats are of many nationalities, usually retired or soon-to-retire professionals and generally well travelled and fairly well-off. Whereas in the south there are definite British "enclaves" packed full of British bars, this is less evident on the Costa Brava.

Popular resorts on the Costa Brava

Lloret de Mar. Today's Lloret - although much larger than the fishing village it was 40 years ago - is a modern resort that still retains some historical treasures.  Despite becoming a thriving tourist town, Lloret has managed to keep its character, and remains a lively, friendly and engaging town. The resort's main street bustles with life day and night. The rocky coastline is dotted with bays.

Tossa de Mar. Tossa de Mar offers an old town and 14th Century castle and two beaches.  Opposite the main sand and shingle beach you will find plenty of restaurants. Formerly a fishing village, Tossa (The Castle on the Sea) is a charming town, rich in history and overflowing with sights.  Situated in the heart of the Costa Brava, the fortress can still be explored in the quarter known as the Villa Vella, all thick defensive walls and sturdy towers. The castle, constructed in 1187, is also worth a visit.

Estartit. Estartit is a small resort of friendly hotels and cosy apartments, edging up the sides of a wooded hillside. A centre of wide streets and a welcoming square beside the town church. And a dark golden beach that's so large there's plenty of room for everyone

Pais. Tranqil Pals is one of the best preserved medieval villages in Catalonia's coastal area. The quiet, walled old quarter has been restored, making a pretty place to explore, with views of the beach in the distance. The long beach and lush golf courses of Platja de Pals are just six kilometres from Pals village.

Santa Susanna. This small and friendly resort in Costa Maresme, boasts 2km of coarse sand beach with a lively promenade. Santa Susana is a pleasant, relaxing town nestling beneath the wooded slopes of the Massif Montnegre, a beautiful national park with marked trails and fabulous views.

Malgrat. Long sandy beaches and a coastal railway connecting the town to the neighbouring resorts make Malgrat a popular modern tourist destination.

Calella de Palafruguell. A charming part of the Costa Brava coastline that's different from a traditional beach holiday with fascinating architecture and museums, traditional restaurants, and some great walks.

Calella. Calella is a young a lively town, the busiest town in the south of the Costa Brava on a stretch known as the Costa del Maresme. Famous for its mild climate and lively holiday towns, this is a 50km stretch of long sandy beaches, attractive towns, mountains and ancient vineyards.
