The Dominican Republic is a haven of soft
sands and sunshine. with a northern coast that looks out across
the Atlantic and southern eastern shores lapped by the Caribbean
Sea.With two coastlines of equal appeal y- the northern coast looks
over the Atlantic and the south east shores run along the Caribbean
Sea.
The Dominican
Republic enjoys all year-round sunshine, some of the best beaches in
the Caribbean and a lush interior. When Columbus, saw the island for
the first time on his voyage to the New World, he said there was no
more beautiful island in the world.
Along both north and south coasts, hotels and holiday
villages vie with each other offering watersports, activities and
beach bars. The northern, Atlantic coast is where you'll find most
tourism developments - especially the 60km strip between Puerto Plata
and Cabarete. But explore the back roads and see sugar plantations,
ramshackle villages and the spirited capital Santo Domingo, in the
south, where the very first Christian structures of the Americas can
be found - including the lavish Cathedral.
For action away
from the sands you can visit the Indian caves of Los Haitises, go
white water rafting or horse riding through the countryside.
The Dominican
Republic is now the most popular destination in the Caribbean, with
more hotel rooms than any other country in the region - a huge leap
considering tourism was hardly heard of 20 years ago. The island has a
well deserved reputation for all-inclusive holidays. All inclusive
vacations have become a keyword here.
For those who
like luxury, the choices are endless. Casa de Campo in La Romaná is so
fancy that it was where pop singer Michael Jackson chose to marry Lisa
Marie Presley.
After Cuba, the
nation is considered one of the top producers of fine cigars. Blessed
with natural resources, the Dominican Republic boasts the Caribbean’s
highest peak, Pico Duarte. The island also tends to be much less
affected by hurricanes than neighbouring Haiti thanks to a policy to
conserve vast tracts of land in the form of national parks which
started in the 1950s.
Popular resorts
in the Dominican Republic
Bavaro. Relaxation is the
word at Bavaro or Punta Cana, as it is also known. It has some
of the best beaches in the Caribbean. In a place where holidays
are hotel based, countryside spreads out behind the resort and
you can walk for miles along the white sands without seeing a
thing
San Juan. Midway along
Dominican Republic's balmy, sun-soaked Atlantic coast, San Juan
sits on a spur of land, jutting out into the warm, blue waters.
The sensual, Latin percussion of the Merengue, the nation's
favourite musical expression, can be heard bouncing from the
stores in the town. San Juan's seafront features incredible
beaches, with fine sands and, at Playa Grande, fantastic waves
make perfect conditions for the surfers who make their base here
every summer. It has one of the most spectacular beaches in the
island, Playa Grande with a kilometre and a half of white
sand but young children might find the waves a little too
tricky. If so, nearby Diamante and Caleton's calmer waters are
perfect.
Bayahibe The tourist resort
of Bayahibe is region of pristine beaches, off-shore wildlife
parks, and sugar plantations and intriguing towns like La Romana,
and dusty Bayahibe itself. Beautiful white sands, tall coconut
palms and verdant islets rise from the Caribbean sea. Altos de
Chavon, just out of town, is a re-creation of a 16th century
Italian village. Bayahibe provides one of the entrances to the
Parque Nacional del Este and Isla Soana. The park consists of
limestone terraces formed a million years ago and caves
containing pre-Columbian carvings of the Tainos, the Dominican
Republic's original inhabitants. The coast's amazing coral
formation makes for colourful diving opportunities. The
southeastern tip of the region, Calderas Bay, is a mysterious
hinterland of mangrove swamps, lagoons and peaceful villages.
Luperon. A small village
situated 2 kilometres from the coast, Luperon appeals to those
looking for a quieter holiday with the hotels having All
Inclusive facilities.
Cofresi. Cofresi is close to
the city of Puerto Plata and has wonderful ocean views, a
natural harbour, and a decent, sandy beach. Cofresi is a
peaceful, self-contained resort with plenty of facilities an the
Caribbean's largest dolphin park, Ocean World.
Cabarete. The bay's location
is exceptional - a wide arc of sand overlooking the wide, blue
expanse of the Atlantic backed by lush palms, winding tracks
into northern Dominican Republic's lush interior, tranquil
lagoons and emerald green hills. An offshore reef at the
entrance to the bay makes swimming safer but an onshore breeze
makes for windsurfing.
Juan Dolio.Just 45 minutes
away from the capital of Santo Domingo, Juan Dolio faces white
sands with bars, restaurants and casinos. Juan Dolio has the
sort of beautiful beach that the eastern coast of the Dominican
Republic is renowned for.
Playa Dorada. Playa Dorada
has sands that stretch as far as the eye can see and is a
purpose built horseshoe shaped resort around a
championship 18 hole golf course.
