Florida is truly America's fun capital and
few places capture our holiday
imagination the way Florida and Orlando do.
Florida has something
for everyone. Although one of America's more compact states, it crams
a lot in. Orlando, International Drive
and the Disney and MGM theme parks are in the heart of the
peninsula and offer easy access to both coasts.
Walt Disney's
eight themed parks are bursting with stomach-churning rides, amazing
light and sound shows and nightly illuminated processions. They are without doubt the state's premier
attraction but are facing tough competition from the MGM stable of theme
parks which offer rides and attractions based on your favourite films, and
a fascinating back-stage tour through the secrets and special effects of
Hollywood.
The central feature of Florida is Orlando but it covers such a large
area that mini-resorts like Lake Buena Vista, Kissimmee,
International Drive are plenty.
International Drive, particularly, has an
international reputation! Here you can try The
Dolly Parton American Stampede, enjoy a night on the Titanic or a
swashbuckling interactive pirate show, take the controls of the Space
Shuttlle , feast at a Medieval banquet or encounter sharks and
alligators,
Florida's giant malls
and shopping outlets will leave you wide-eyed in wonder. There are
thrilling water parks, and Kissimmee has its own attractions including
Water Mania water park.
Florida is easy to explore by car allowing you to experience some
wonderful beaches along the length of the Atlantic coast from beyond
Palm Valley in the north to Miami Beach. The Scenic and
Historic Coastal Byway passes many places of interest. From Miami, follow US-1
south all the way to Key West. Originally part of the Dixie Highway,
the route is dotted with markers counting the miles to Key West in
reverse order.
A drive along the
Gulf Coast takes you past beautiful sandy beaches of islands
such as Sanibel and Captiva. Or a 30 minute drive north will bring you
to the real Orlando with its business district, history and plenty of good
restaurants and bars.
Towards the west lies a coastline swathed with
golden beaches. There are lovely soft sands at St Petersburg, Clearwater and
Tampa while further south you will find chic Naples and the Everglades
National Park which is home to wildlife such as manatee and crocodile!
Perched on the southernmost tip of Florida are the Keys, a haven for
diving enthusiasts while in sharp contrast
nearby Miami is party capital boasting an art-deco heritage and Spanish
influences.
A trip to the east coast is a must for any summer
holiday to Florida. The Atlantic seas crash dramatically against the
shore. With Fort Lauderdale, also known as Little Venice and the NASA
Kennedy Space Centre, you won't be short of attractions.
Florida is a great place to explore
especially if you can do it at your own pace. And that's exactly why
holiday villas in Florida are so popular. Florida has something for
everyone - including around 360 days of sunshine per year!
