An island but not an island - Lefkas sits
off the Greek mainland and can only be accessed across a drawbridge
over the Lefkas Canal. The swing bridge which links it to the mainland
means it enjoys an island atmosphere as well as easy access to some of
the most beautiful parts of mainland Greece and the moment you come
here, it feels like you've stepped into a world far from the rat race.
Lefkas
means white and its dramatic white rock cliffs explains where it gets
it name from. The island is picturesque and has numerous calm water
beaches that almost whisper peace and quiet.
The east coast
has countless olive groves and vineyards which are protected by Greek
law. The south coast has the most dramatic cliffs and coves and is
excellent for exploring by foot.
From the
pine-cloaked mountains and green fields of the interior to the
spectacular white cliffs of its west coast, Lefkas oozes tradition
with the exception of parts of the east coast, where tourism and
yachting attracts crowds.
Here is Nidri,
the island's liveliest resort – although in no way has it spawned
vast, high-rise hotels and still retains lots of local atmosphere.
Along the coast, fishing villages stretch around pretty harbours and
there are secluded pebble coves and long dune-backed beaches. Close to
the eastern shores, are the wooded islets of Skorpios, Sparti and
Mandouri and Meganissi, Lefkas' beautiful island neighbour.
Regular boat trips
ferry passengers to neighbouring Greek Islands, often accompanied by
friendly and inquisitive dolphins. Visit Porto Katsiki beach in the
south west to gaze at its sheer white cliffs , try the seafood in the
pretty harbour of Syvota or drive to mainland Greece in an hour, and
visit the Necromanteion of Ephyra – the legendary gate of Hades.
