Lisbon is a lively capital built on seven hills and stretching along the banks of the River Tagus and is one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Yet within an hours drive from Lisbon, the capital city Portugal, the Lisbon Coast offers a range of interesting resorts.
The capital of Portugal since its conquest from the Moors in 1147, Lisbon is a legendary city with over 20 centuries of history.

Travelling around Lisbon is easy, and although most places are accessible and easily explored on foot, it is advisable to take the funicular railways up steep hills.
The fifth-century Castelo São Jorge is the fortress around which Lisbon was built and is now famous for its hilltop vantage point. Strolling along the banks of the Tagus you can view the stately Royal Palace overlooking the river and the statue of Christ the King above Tagus Bridge.
Stroll along the waterfront to see the decorative Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries where many explorers set sail from, or the flamboyant Monastery of Jéronimos. Don't miss exploring some of the city’s smaller districts, though, including the Alfama Quarter. Between Alfama and the Barrio Alto there is a maze of 17th-century lanes sprinkled with folk clubs, nightspots and restaurants.
Travelling around Lisbon is easy, and although most places are easily explored on foot, it is advisable to take the funicular railways up steep hills. There is also a good tram network, regular buses, the Metro service and taxis. Trains depart from Lisbon to the coast resorts of Estoril and Cascais every 15 minutes, a journey of around 40-50 minutes, and cost from approximately €3 each way.
