Majorca - or Mallorca giving the island its correct Spanish name - is
the most popular holiday destination in the Balearic Islands.. It
has some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean, but to the north,
the mighty Traumuntana mountain reaches for the blue sky and just a
short drive inland and it's like the first airplane never landed
here. In the warm Balearic sun, you can take in silent olive groves
and have lunch in a shaded village square with the locals.
Majorca's
landscape is very varied, due to it's geological formation. As it's an island, it's not surprising that Majorca is famous for
it's numerous sandy beaches. Wherever you decide to stay in Majorca,
you can guarantee that you will not be far away from one of the
island's many stunning beaches.
The Romans conquered the island in 123 BC and
established the island at the crossroads of the Mediterranean as a
lucrative trading centre with prosperous settlements dotted around
its coast.
The island still stands at the centre of the
Mediterranean and centuries of invasion and settlement has made the
Majorcans a sociable lot people far more chatty and approachable
than their mainland neighbours
The first
thing which attracts your attention is the Tramuntana Mountain range,
formed by a line of mountains running parallel to the north west coast,
the highest of which is Puig Major. These mountains are the source
of the island's fresh water which runs down to the islands growing regions
where orange, clementine and lemon trees are in abundance.
With great sunshine hours in the summer, fantastic beaches, excellent food
and entertainment and friendliness, the islands offer a good choice for a
holiday. Majorca has a variety of resorts catering
for the young, the old, families and couples and golf has become a major
attraction over recent years.
