Magical Mexico - lapped by the Caribbean
sea, warm and mystical this is an enchanting country of
contrasts and stunning sandy beaches.
Mexico is made
for days on the beach and lively nights out with incredible resorts
like Cancun and Acapulco.
Sharing borders with the USA
(in the north), and Belize and Guatemala (in the southeast), Mexico is
a vast country covering almost 800,000 square miles of land – eight times the size of the UK.
With desert sands, Mayan
ruins, jungle and boasting with two coastlines, Mexico has lot of beach
waiting to be explored. The Yucatan Peninsula juts out from the bottom of
Mexico’s curve and is home to popular beach resorts such as Cancun and
Playa del Carmen, where soft white sands are lapped by the warm waters
of the Caribbean Sea.
The resorts of Cabo San
Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, together known as "The Capes" are located
at the very tip of the Baja California Peninsula. Of the two, Cabo San
Lucas is the better known and the more visited destination.
Cancun is Mexico's top tourist destination and is on the tip of the
Yucatan peninsula. Cancun's beaches offer gleaming white sands and the
magical clear waters of the Caribbean with a wide range of
restaurants, exciting night life and shops.
Going on holiday in the
summer can be quite hot in Mexico but the central areas, because of
their altitudes, are usually much cooler and less humid.
This cooler weather makes the colonial cities of Mexico a big
attraction for those looking to explore these central regions. Of
course the beaches are always there if you just have to be near the
water and surf. Acapulco, the number one of Mexican beach resorts, is
ever-popular with year around foreign and domestic visitors. Acapulco
is the largest, loudest and most boisterous resort in Mexico.
The official
currency of Mexico is the Mexican Peso. American funds are widely
accepted, though it is best buying some pesos, especially for
shopping at the Mercado and tips. Currency can be exchanged at casas
de cambio (exchange houses), banks, and hotels, though these usually
have the worst rates. ATMs are readily available and accept foreign
bankcards. Major credit cards are widely accepted. Traveler's checks
or letters of credit in U.S. dollars issued by well-known banks or
travel organizations are readily negotiable in banks and hotels but
sterling traveler's cheques are not readily negotiable except at head
offices of banks in the country's capita, and may be subject to a
considerable discount.
I
Popular resorts
in Mexico
Cancun.
When the Mexican tourist
authority wanted to create a tourist resort to rival Florida they
chose the right place - this lonely spur, shaped like a number seven,
arching out from the mainland at the old market town of Cancun. Twenty
years later and the lagoon is clean and fresh, the sand is sieved and
sparkly, and the spur of land is now one swift and straight avenue of
designer malls, water sports clubs, dolphin shows and hotel complexes,
each more dramatic than the last. Cancun's hotel zone stretches for
twelve miles along a slender island, with endless white sands and blue
seas. There are many activities available including scuba diving, plus
shopping malls, and a Downtown area selling arts and crafts. Lively
Cancun also has bars, clubs and restaurants aplenty.
Riviera Maya.
Head south from
Cancun into a region of relaxing resorts, offering stunning beaches, a
more traditional atmosphere and a wonderful range of attractions. The
stretch from Punta Brava just south of Cancun International Airport to
Punta Allen just south of Tulum, is superb. Cove after cove of deep
blue waters bite into the coast where the rainforest meets the sand.
Just offshore, the Great Mayan Reef is the largest coral reef in the
Western Hemisphere.
Antigua.
For a truly restful
holiday, you would find it hard to beat Antigua. This quiet resort
offers a small selection of shops, bars and restaurants for your
delectation. The main attraction, however is it excellent golf course.
Playa del Carmen.
A fishing
village in a former life, Playa Del Carmen is a growing resort with a
small but lively selection of restaurants and bars and a gorgeous
beach.
Playacar..
A neat suburb of
Playa Del Carmen, Playacar is self-contained enough, a purpose built
community taking full advantage of its glorious position, adjacent to
one of the Mayan Riviera's best beaches, and just a hop skip and a
jump away from one of its most appealing towns - the unashamedly
Mexican township of Playa Del Carmen.
Puerto Aventuras.
At the heart of
the Mayan Riviera, Puerto Aventura's marina is a dream - the only one,
in fact, along this stretch of the coast. It is a busy place, as
yachts and cruisers bounce and bob side-by-side in the emerald waters.
Puerto Aventuras is also the centre of sport fishing for Mexico's
Caribbean coast. Puerto Aventuras is a quiet alternative to the busier
Playa del Carmen but, conveniently, Playa's excellent restaurants,
lively nightlife and good shops and markets are just a five-minute
taxi ride away.
Punta Brava.
Punta Brava and Playa
Paraiso form part of a developing area on the Mayan Riviera between
Cancun and Playa del Carmen. With white sand beaches stretching out
and no resort centres to speak of.
Tulum.
Tulum is one of Mexico's
main Mayan archaeological sites and its ancient ruins sit on a cliff
above a stunning white sand beach. This peaceful resort, with a
selection of shops, bars and restaurants, is an ideal place to combine
a relaxing beach holiday. Don't miss the ecological parks of Xel-Ha
and Xcaret.
Xcaret.
The picturesque area of
Xcaret rests on a peaceful cove of soft white sand, just a few
kilometres from Playa del Carmen.
Mexico City.
Mexico City (Ciudad
de México), claims to be the world’s most populous city and at 2,240m
above sea level, is also one of the highest. The city was built in
1521 by the Spaniards on the ruins of the Aztec capital of
Tenochtitlán. Today, it is a blend of modern skyscrapers, wide
boulevards and narrow streets, churches and colonial buildings.
Acapulco. The world famous and
legendary Pearl of the Pacific is one of the most visited tourist
destinations in Mexico. In spite of living to the rhythm of modern
life and having large hotels and first class services, Acapulco still
maintains its beauty and original attractions.
Cozumel.
Cozumel is Mexico's
largest island, just 12 miles off the coast of the Yucatan
Peninsula. Cozumel measures 28 miles long and 10 miles wide and is
world renowned for it's white sandy beaches and the azure Caribbean
ocean
