Resting in the turquoise seas of the Med, low-key Minorca or Menorca isn’t as well-known as the mainland Costa’s - but it should be. Peace and quiet rule here. The Balearic Islands may be dominated by Majorca but Menorca is becoming increasingly popular.

Minorca has bounty-like beaches,- more than its Balearic cousins put together. It’s also an open-air museum with its megalithic monuments.

There's something Aegean about Minorca, a rustic island of peace and great natural beauty. Minorca's 'Taulas' - strange T shaped stone monuments - are remnants of a Bronze Age society which new abou the movements of the stars and these stone temples are perfectly aligned with the major constellations. These, coupled with the island's many other burial mounds, give Menorca a mysterious air.

Visit Cales Coves, on the north coast, one of Minorca’s most memorable sights. The rugged cliffs guarding this beautiful bay are home to more than 100 Bronze Age caves carved into the rock face.

Strangely Minorca, specifically Mahon, has earned its place in culinary history because of mahonesa, or mayonnaise, which was invented in one of the city's restaurants. Fish dishes are better on Menorca than in neighbouring Mallorca, with steaks from British-introduced cattle especially fine.

If you like the thrills and spills of a waterpark, Minorca has two to choose from. Aqua Rock in Cala Bosc has plenty of chutes, while families with younger children might prefer the gentler slides of the Aqua Park in Cala en Forcat.

Minorca is much quieter and more relaxing than the other Balearic Islands ideally suited to a quiet holiday and the beaches will appeal to anyone who enjoys all water sports.

Popular resorts on Menorca

Arenal D'en Castell. Arenal D'en Castell sits where the pine trees and rocky valleys meet the sea, a resort protected by a wide, perfect horseshoe of sand. The arms of two headlands give the resort its own favourable microclimate, and keeps its waves gentle enough for youngsters to paddle. The natural harbour even helps calm the winds which blow across this side of Menorca.

Cala Blanca. Meaning literally 'white cove', Cala Blanca is a small resort which offers good beaches and a beautiful setting backed by dense pine woods.

Cala n Blanes. On the outskirts of Ciutadella, the inlet of Cala n Blanes offers a slice of picture-perfect Menorcan life, with a good range of facilities, a great beach, and easy access to Ciutadella's stylish shops and harbour-side restaurants and bars. The coast here is indented in a series of rocky coves.

Cala n Bosh. Busy Cala n Bosch, in Menorca's sunny southwest is clustered around a marina, just a few hundred metres from the open sea. With its impressive yachts and waterside bars,Cala n Bosch feels a little more upmarket than most Minorcan resorts.
